Story (Storey)

A story is one level of a building, the space between one floor and the floor or roof above it. American English spells it story and British English storey.

Houses are described by their number of stories: one-story, two-story, and so on. A half story is a level partly under the roof, such as a finished attic with sloped ceilings.

Floor numbering differs by country. In the United States the ground floor is the first floor, while in much of Europe the floor above the ground floor is the first floor.

Each story is measured separately and the above-grade stories are added together for the home's total. A floor plan normally shows one story per sheet. See measuring a multi-story home.
