Square Yard
A square yard is a unit of area equal to a square three feet on each side. It equals 9 square feet, or about 0.836 square meters, and is abbreviated sq yd or yd².
The square yard is mainly used for materials sold by coverage, such as carpet, sod, fabric and some flooring. It also appears in property measurements in a few countries, including parts of South Asia.
To convert square feet to square yards, divide by 9. A 180 square foot room is 20 square yards.
Flooring quotes may be in square yards while plans are in square feet, so convert before comparing. Materials also need an allowance for cuts and waste, covered in square footage for flooring.
