Square Meter

A square meter is the metric unit of area, equal to a square one meter on each side. It is written m² or sq m, and it is the SI unit for area used in most of the world for floor space and land.

One square meter equals 10,000 square centimeters and about 10.764 square feet. Larger areas are given in hectares, where one hectare is 10,000 square meters, or in square kilometers.

The spelling is square metre in British and international English and square meter in American English. Both refer to the same unit.

Metric plans list dimensions in meters or millimeters, so area is length times width in meters. To convert a result to square feet, multiply by about 10.764; the square meter chart lists common sizes.
