Room
A room is an enclosed space inside a building, separated from other spaces by walls, a floor and a ceiling, and usually entered through a door or an opening. Rooms are named for what happens in them, such as sleeping, cooking or bathing.
Houses mix private rooms, like bedrooms and bathrooms, with shared rooms, like kitchens and living rooms. Service spaces such as closets, hallways, laundry rooms and mechanical rooms connect or support the others.
A room's size is usually given as two dimensions, width by length, for example 12 by 14 feet. Its area is those two numbers multiplied together.
On a floor plan each room is labeled and dimensioned, and its area comes from its interior dimensions. The total square footage of a house is measured around the outside of the building, so adding up room areas gives a smaller number. Typical sizes by room type are on the room size charts.
