Plan View
A plan view is a drawing that shows an object or building from directly above, as if looking straight down. Floor plans, site plans, roof plans and ceiling plans are all plan views.
A plan view is an orthographic projection, which means there is no perspective: parallel lines stay parallel and every part is drawn at the same scale. That makes distances measurable anywhere on the drawing.
Plan views are paired with elevations, which show vertical faces, and sections, which show a vertical cut through the building.
Horizontal distances and areas come from plan views. Heights, such as ceiling heights, come from elevations and sections instead.
