Loft
A loft is an upper room or story directly under the roof, or an open space raised partway into a tall room. The word also names apartments made from converted industrial buildings, with high ceilings and open floor space.
In a house, a loft is often an open area at the top of the stairs that overlooks the floor below. It may be used as an office, playroom or extra sleeping space.
Loft apartments usually have few interior walls, exposed structure and large windows.
A finished loft can count toward living area if it meets the ceiling height rules: at least 7 feet over half its floor, with parts under 5 feet left out. See loft square footage.
