Kitchen
A kitchen is a room used for storing, preparing and cooking food. A home kitchen typically has a sink, a cooking appliance, a refrigerator, cabinets and a work surface such as a countertop.
Kitchen layouts are often described by the shape of the counters: galley, L-shaped, U-shaped, or with an island. Designers use the idea of a work triangle between the sink, the stove and the refrigerator to judge how well a layout works.
In many newer homes the kitchen opens into the dining and living areas without full walls between them.
A closed kitchen is measured wall to wall like any room. In an open plan, where the kitchen has no walls on one or more sides, its boundary on the plan is set by the counters, the island or a change in flooring. Typical sizes are in average kitchen square footage.
