Basement
A basement is a story of a building that is partly or fully below ground level. It can be finished as living space or left unfinished for storage, laundry and mechanical equipment.
A full basement runs under the whole house. A daylight or walkout basement has one side at or near ground level, with windows or a door to the outside. In warm climates and on some soils, houses are built on a slab or over a crawl space instead.
Finishing a basement usually means adding insulation, drywall, flooring, lighting and heat.
Under ANSI Z765, basement space is below grade and is not included in gross living area, even when finished. Finished basement area is reported separately. See are basements included in square footage.
