Attic
An attic is the space directly below the pitched roof of a building. It is often left unfinished for storage and insulation, but some attics are finished as bedrooms, offices or playrooms.
Because the roof slopes, attic ceilings are high in the middle and low at the edges. Short walls called knee walls often mark off the lowest part, which is left as storage.
Dormers are sometimes added to a roof to give an attic more headroom and window light.
A finished attic counts as living area only if it meets the ceiling height rules: at least 7 feet over half its finished area, with any part under 5 feet left out. The details are in finished attic GLA rules.
