Area
Area is the size of a two-dimensional surface, the amount of flat space a shape covers. It is expressed in square units such as square feet, square meters or acres.
Simple shapes have simple formulas. A rectangle is length times width, a triangle is half the base times the height, and a circle is pi times the radius squared. Complex shapes are handled by dividing them into simple ones and adding the pieces, or by using a coordinate method such as the shoelace formula.
Area differs from perimeter, which is the distance around a shape, and from volume, which measures three-dimensional space.
On a floor plan, area is found from dimensions or from a drawing at a known scale. L-shaped and irregular rooms are usually split into rectangles first, as shown in measuring irregular rooms.
