Where can I find the square footage of my house?

You can find your home's reported square footage in several places, but the number varies by source and measurement standard. Start with the county assessor or property tax record, usually searchable on the assessor's website. Your purchase appraisal, a prior appraisal report, the MLS listing, permit records, survey, architectural plans, and closing documents may also state a figure.

For the most defensible number, review an appraisal or have the house measured under a recognized residential measurement standard. Public records can be outdated. They may omit additions, or treat garages, basements, porches, accessory units, and finished attics differently than an appraiser or listing service would.

If you need the figure for a renovation, insurance, a sale, or a valuation dispute, do not rely on an online listing alone. Confirm what is included: above-grade living area, below-grade finished area, garage, covered patio, and any unpermitted or converted space.
