Where can I find the dimensions of my house?

Look first in documents tied to the home. A prior appraisal report often includes an exterior sketch with dimensions and a breakdown of gross living area, garage, porches, and other spaces. Architectural plans, a builder packet, property survey, permit drawings, home inspection report, MLS listing, insurance file, and closing documents may also show dimensions.

Your city or county building department may keep plans submitted for permits, particularly for newer construction or major remodels. Contact the department with the property address or parcel number and ask whether approved plans are available. Access rules vary, and older homes may have no archived drawings at all.

County assessor records can give a reported building area, but they usually lack room dimensions and may be out of date.

If the plans are missing or unreliable, hire a drafter, architect, measurement service, or floor plan photographer to produce an as-built plan. For construction or appraisal decisions, verify the critical dimensions in the field rather than relying on public records or a listing.
