What makes a good floor plan?

A good floor plan succeeds on flow, proportion, and honesty of space. Flow means logical circulation: you shouldn't cross through bedrooms to reach shared spaces, the kitchen should connect efficiently to dining and the garage or entry for groceries, and hallways should be minimized since they consume square footage without adding usable rooms.

Proportion means rooms sized to their function, with bedrooms that fit real furniture, and reasonable ratios (a 7-foot-wide "bedroom" technically counts but lives poorly). Good plans also separate public zones (living, kitchen, dining) from private zones (bedrooms, baths), place bathrooms near bedrooms, provide adequate storage, and orient main living spaces toward natural light.

Beyond layout, a good plan on paper is one you can actually verify: accurate dimensions, consistent scale, and square footage that matches reality. Listings and older drawings frequently overstate room sizes or total area. Before committing to a purchase, renovation, or furniture order based on a plan, it's worth checking the numbers. MeasureFloorPlan lets you scale any plan image and confirm room dimensions and total area in minutes.
