What is a basic floor plan?

A basic floor plan is a simple top-down drawing showing a building's layout: walls, rooms with names, doors, windows, and usually overall dimensions, without the detail of construction documents. It answers the questions "what rooms are there, how are they arranged, and roughly how big are they" and nothing more.

What it includes: wall outlines, door swings, window locations, room labels, major fixtures (kitchen counters, bathroom fixtures, stairs), and nominal dimensions like 12x14 per room. What it omits: electrical, plumbing, framing, materials, elevations, and code details, which belong to full construction drawings. Basic plans are the standard format for real estate listings, rental marketing, renovation discussions, and furniture planning, and they're well within reach of any homeowner to produce with graph paper or free software.

Their common weakness is dimensional looseness: rounded labels, no stated scale, and geometry drawn approximately.
