What does a floor plan look like?

A floor plan is a top-down drawing of a building as if sliced horizontally about four feet above the floor. Walls appear as thick parallel lines or filled bands. Doors are shown as a straight line with a quarter-circle arc indicating swing direction. Windows appear as thin breaks in walls, often with a lighter double line. Stairs are parallel treads with an arrow marking the direction up.

Fixtures are drawn as simple symbols: toilets, sinks, tubs, kitchen counters, and appliances in their installed positions. Room names and dimensions are labeled inside each space, and professional drawings add dimension lines outside the plan plus a scale notation like 1/4" = 1'. Marketing floor plans in real estate listings are simplified versions: cleaner, often furnished with furniture icons, and usually missing precise dimensions.
