How to scale a floor plan?

To scale a floor plan, find a known, reliable dimension on the drawing, such as an exterior wall labeled 36'-0". In a digital takeoff tool, choose the calibration or scale command, click both endpoints of that wall, and enter 36 feet. Every line or area you measure on that sheet afterward reads in real units.

On a printed drawing, use the stated scale with an architectural scale ruler. At 1/4 inch = 1 foot, a 5-inch line represents 20 feet. Metric plans may use a ratio like 1:100, where 1 centimeter on paper equals 1 meter in reality. A graphic scale bar works too, though a written dimension is the better calibration reference.

Confirm the scale by measuring a second labeled distance somewhere else on the plan. If it does not match, the PDF may have been scanned, resized, stretched, or exported incorrectly.

Recalibrate each page. Sheets within the same plan set can be drawn at different scales.
