How to properly dimension a floor plan?

Proper dimensioning follows a few core rules drawn from architectural drafting standards. Place dimension lines outside the floor plan where possible, organized in tiers: the innermost line dimensions openings like windows and doors (to their centerlines), the middle line dimensions wall segments and partitions, and the outermost line gives overall building dimensions. Dimension to the face of exterior walls and to the centerline or face of interior walls, and stay consistent about which.

Every wall, opening, and structural element should be locatable from the dimensions given, with no need to measure the drawing itself. Avoid duplicate or contradictory dimensions, keep text readable at the drawing's print scale, and note the scale explicitly (1/4" = 1' is standard for residential plans). Chain dimensions should add up to the overall dimension on the same line.
