How to measure blueprints?

To measure blueprints, first check the title block or plan view for the drawing scale. A common residential scale is 1/4 inch = 1 foot, so every quarter inch on paper equals one real foot. On a blueprint printed at its intended size, an architectural scale ruler set to that scale reads the dimension directly.

Place the ruler's zero mark at one end of the wall or feature and read the dimension at the other end.

Use written dimensions whenever the sheet has them. Dimension lines with arrowheads, ticks, or hash marks state the intended real-world distance and are more reliable than scaling a printed or digital plan. PDFs get resized during printing or scanning, and that throws off any ruler measurement.

On a digital blueprint, calibrate the measuring tool to a known labeled distance, then verify it against a second dimension elsewhere on the sheet.

Do not scale a drawing marked "N.T.S." or "Not to Scale." Only the stated dimensions on those sheets count. Record your measurement basis, including sheet number, scale, and whether dimensions run to finished faces, framing, centerlines, or exterior walls.
