How to measure a room without a tape measure?

The most practical substitute for a tape measure is a laser distance measurer. Hold it against one wall, aim at the opposite wall, and record the reading, then repeat for the width. Many laser measures are accurate to about 1/8 inch. Some models claim closer to 1/16 inch when used correctly within their rated range.

For a rough estimate, you can use a smartphone measurement app, floor tiles of a known size, standard furniture dimensions, your shoe length, or a fixed object such as a 36-inch interior door. These work for furniture planning or layout ideas. They are not reliable enough for construction, appraisal, or ordering material.

To improve accuracy, measure each dimension twice. Keep the laser level and square to the target, and avoid aiming at soft or reflective surfaces.

For an irregular room, sketch the shape and measure each wall segment on its own. Multiply length by width for each rectangular area, then add the sections for the total floor area.
