How to figure square feet of a wall?

Multiply the wall's width by its height. A wall 14 feet wide and 8 feet high contains 112 square feet: 14 × 8 = 112. Measure from floor to ceiling and take in the wall's full horizontal length, then repeat for each wall you need to cover.

For paint, drywall, wallpaper, or paneling, calculate every wall on its own and add them together. If you are estimating finish material, subtract large doors and windows. A standard 3-foot by 7-foot door is 21 square feet; a 4-foot by 5-foot window is 20 square feet. Whether openings come out depends on the product and the installer. Paint estimates often leave small openings in because of cutting and extra coats.

An angled wall or gable end divides into a rectangle and a triangle. Calculate the rectangle as usual, then add one-half of the triangle's base multiplied by its height.

Keep the units consistent and round up when buying material. Wall area differs from floor area: walls are width × height, floors are length × width.
