How is a floor plan measured?

A floor plan is measured by capturing the length of every wall, then using those dimensions to calculate the area of each room and the structure as a whole. In the field, this is done with a laser distance meter or tape measure, working around the exterior perimeter and interior rooms. For existing homes, professionals typically measure exterior walls to get gross living area, following the ANSI Z765 standard used by appraisers and lenders.

If you already have a floor plan image, blueprint, or sketch, you don't need to measure the physical space at all. You can set a known scale on the drawing, then trace walls and rooms to get accurate dimensions and square footage.
