How do I make my floor plan?

Start by measuring your space: work room by room with a laser distance meter or tape, recording each wall length, plus door and window positions. Sketch as you go on graph paper, letting each square equal one foot, which keeps your rough draft close to scale. Then transfer the sketch into floor plan software (options range from free browser tools to professional CAD) where you can draw walls to exact dimensions, add doors, windows, and fixtures, and export a clean drawing.

Key habits for accuracy: measure at consistent height, record dimensions to the nearest quarter inch or centimeter, verify that opposite walls match, and confirm that room dimensions sum to your overall exterior measurements.

If instead of drawing from scratch you already have some version of a plan (an old blueprint, a listing image, a builder's brochure, a hand sketch), you may not need to redraw anything.
