Can I draw my own floor plans?

Yes. For most purposes (planning renovations, listing a property, arranging furniture, communicating with contractors) a self-drawn floor plan is completely legitimate and common. The process: measure every wall with a tape or laser meter, sketch proportionally on graph paper or in free software like Sweet Home 3D or Floorplanner, add doors, windows, and fixtures, and label dimensions. No license is required to draw a plan of your own home.

The limits arrive with permits and construction: many jurisdictions require stamped drawings from a licensed architect or engineer for structural changes, additions, and new construction, and construction documents demand details (framing, electrical, code compliance) beyond a layout drawing. But for the measurement-and-layout layer, you're fully capable.

The most common DIY failure point is accuracy: forgetting wall thickness, mismeasuring, or drawing rooms that don't sum to the exterior footprint.
