How to Measure Square Footage from a PDF Floor Plan

PDF is the gold standard format for floor plan measurement. CubiCasa, Matterport, iGUIDE, architect offices, and appraisal software all export floor plans as PDFs. Uploading the original PDF — rather than a screenshot — gives you the highest resolution and most accurate trace possible.

Why PDF is the best format

PDFs contain vector or high-resolution raster graphics that render cleanly at any zoom level. When the measurement tool processes your PDF it produces a sharp image where wall lines are precisely defined — making corner placement more accurate than with compressed JPGs or low-resolution scans. Architect drawings and professional floor plan exports in PDF can have effective resolution equivalent to 600–1200 DPI.

Uploading a PDF

Go to MeasureFloorPlan.com and drag your PDF onto the upload area. The tool renders the first page. Processing takes a few seconds for large or complex PDFs. Most floor plan PDFs are well under 10MB and upload immediately.

Handling multi-page PDFs

The tool renders page 1. If your floor plan is on a different page, extract it first. macOS Preview: File → Export as PDF with just the target page selected. Adobe Acrobat: Pages panel → right-click → Extract Pages. Windows: Print the specific page to PDF using Microsoft Print to PDF. Any platform: In your PDF viewer, print → select PDF as printer → enter the specific page number → save as a new PDF. Or take a high-resolution screenshot of the floor plan page — zoom to fill your screen and screenshot at full resolution.

When to screenshot instead of uploading the PDF

Some PDFs don't work well with direct upload: password-protected PDFs that only let you view (not download), PDFs with interactive elements or embedded 3D content, or large document sets you can't easily extract a single page from. In these cases, zoom to the floor plan page in your browser, take a full-resolution screenshot with the floor plan filling the screen, and upload the screenshot. A well-cropped, full-zoom screenshot is nearly as accurate as the PDF itself.

PDF from CubiCasa, Matterport, and iGUIDE

These platforms all export clean high-resolution PDFs. CubiCasa PDFs typically show one floor per page — for a two-story home extract and upload each floor as a separate single-page PDF. Matterport exports a ZIP with per-floor JPGs and a combined PDF. iGUIDE exports a clean PDF with labeled dimensions and scale bar.

Architect drawings and blueprint PDFs

Full architectural drawing sets can be 50+ pages. Extract just the floor plan sheet(s). These typically include a scale bar and dimension notations making calibration straightforward. Use the longest labeled dimension on the plan for scale.
